The ATHENA Award and Scholarship Program, honoring outstanding women leaders for their career successes, service to the community and encouragement of women, seeks to inspire others to achieve excellence in their professional and personal lives. ATHENA has been in Nashville since 1991, through a collaborative effort of local women's organizations in partnership with local businesses and individual sponsors. In 1993, ATHENA added a scholarship program to help afford access to higher education and to help build the pipeline of future leaders. The Nashville ATHENA Award and Scholarship Program operates pursuant to a license from ATHENA International and under the CABLE Foundation's 501(c)(3).
Since the program's inception in Lansing, Mich., in 1982, more than 5,000 ATHENA sculptures have been presented to outstanding women in more than 500 communities in the United States and around the world.
The Tennessee Women's Political Caucus nominated Holly Spann this year.
